Founded in 2013, Access Holdings (“Access”) is a Baltimore-based private investment firm with approximately $1 billion of Assets Under Management (“AUM”). Access makes direct investments in essential service-based businesses with enterprise values between $50 million - $1 billion. Access Holdings takes a research-based, thematic approach to investing, looking to acquire businesses in niche service industries that are positioned to outperform.  Access seeks to create value over time through active management oversight and support of its portfolio company partners.


Role Overview

Access Holdings is seeking outstanding candidates for the Director of Research (DOR) Role. The DOR will work closely with investment team professionals in identifying, framing, and analyzing potential investment theses and opportunities that fit within Access’ overall strategy.   The DOR will lead and oversee the research process, continuously identifying and examining potential trends, industries and investment ideas that may be worth pursuing.  Additionally, the DOR will regularly document and present potential investment theses (in partnership with investment team members) to the Access investment committee for review and evaluation.   Given Access’ approach to proprietary research, the DOR will engage with a variety of 3rd parties and data sources to deliver a steady flow of insights and ideas for consideration.

The position will be based in Baltimore, Maryland.


Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and drive the firm’s research process
  • Frame potential investment ideas based on examination of key trends, events, growth ideas with existing portfolio companies and market insights
  • Monitor and report key trends, themes and events and their potential impact on key industries and markets
  • Guide/Conduct extensive thematic research in collaboration with investment team members
  • Provide strategic thought leadership on emerging “white space” opportunities and business models that are positioned to “win”
  • Develop/enhance research tools to be utilized by the firm and portfolio companies
  • Prepare key research deliverables that are part of the investment process
  • Manage 3rd party research relationships


Professional Qualifications

  • 4-5 years of experience working in a top-tier strategy consulting firm or corporate development role within a business
  • Proven experience analyzing markets and industries to understand future attractiveness and drivers of future value
  • Experience conducting research for an alternative asset/investment manager a plus
  • Experience communicating complex investment strategies with individual and institutional partners, prospects, and team members
  • Proven ability to resolve complex investment objectives with creative ideas and logic
  • Advanced academic degree and professional designations (CFA, CAIA) preferred
  • Competency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
